The outer layers of a sandwich panel can be constructed of sheet metal, plastic, or solid wood veneer, although they are most commonly formed of oriented strand board when used in building structures. This sort of board is made of a composite of slivers of wood that have been bound together with resin in a specific pattern. The skins are selected based on location in which the panels will be used. The layers adhere to a material core that both insulates and stiffens the panel using adhesive and pressurisation. Cores can be produced from a wide range of different materials. The core of a polystyrene or polyurethane foam product is frequently used as the material for the outer layer. Aluminium honeycomb and balsa wood are two more types of cores. The use of treated polyurethane or mineral fibre such as Nomex in the core of the sandwich panel, it can also be made fire-resistant.
